It’s hard to be different in high school. Five apparently random students who have to stay for detention one day discover just how hard it can be! In Circle of Five: The Pha Yul Trilogy Book 1 by Jan Raymond, Cassie and her brother Sam, Sebastian, Ryan and Maya share an unexplained electrical phenomenon during detention one day that leads to some very strange changes in their lives. Under the supervision of Mr. Harris, the football coach, each of them learns about new abilities they have and practices to keep these under control. The adventure that results when their secret comes out brings Sam to the point of death and provides them with the incentive to work harder to use their seemingly supernatural powers to protect one another. What is their role as they discover the truth of their backgrounds and their relationship to Mr. Harris? And who is trying to uncover their secrets and hurt them?

Circle of Five: The Pha Yul Trilogy Book 1 by Jan Raymond brings five students together who either don’t really like each other or have nothing in common and creates a team that must work together for their own safety and survival. Easy to read and interesting to follow, Circle of Five touches on the issues and insecurities this age group faces and demonstrates the power of cooperation, mutual respect and responsibility. The differences between the students and the circumstances they each face individually create a bond through understanding that is hard to break and a valuable lesson for everyone.
