Close Range by Russell Williams is an action-packed, thrilling crime novel following Detective Rick Malone as he investigates a group of thieves. Malone frequents a restaurant run by Beth, a woman who has found herself in a bit of a predicament. Beth’s fiancé has let his ex-convict cousin stay with them and Beth is feeling a bit uneasy. She decides to ask Detective Malone for advice on what to do; however, advice may not be enough in this situation.

Close Range by Russell Williams comes across as a very unassuming novel at first but quickly builds into an action-packed and thrilling tale. You soon come to love Malone, especially with his no-nonsense attitude. I thoroughly enjoyed the build-up for this story and honestly didn’t expect the twist. I also felt such immense sympathy for Beth and that in itself speaks volumes. The author was able to get me so emotionally invested in this story and the characters in such a short space of time and that is the mark of a great writer. The writing style perfectly complemented the theme and tone of the story and gave just enough detail to paint a picture of the events. I really enjoyed reading this novel and look forward to reading the other book in this series. Detective Malone has definitely acquired a new fan and I think any other fan of the genre would feel the same. I would gladly recommend this to other fans of crime novels.
