Cloud Piercer by Paula Welch is a thriller pulsating with action. After a plane crash in the Tasman Valley in Mount Cook National Park in New Zealand, many are left dead and injured, and the freezing temperatures make it impossible for rescue services to operate efficiently. With frequent earthquakes and other natural catastrophic occurrences, the survivors are threatened from every side, hemmed in by tons of snow and ice that can move down the mountains at any moment. Working together with the Mountain Rescue, Captain Benjamin Flynn must ensure the safety of each surviving passenger while waiting for help. But the wounded are getting restless and reckless. With a female passenger murdered and time working against him, can Captain Flynn help the people through the inclement weather conditions and find answers and the help they need?

This is an engaging tale with tense moments that will grip readers emotionally. The plot is simple but with a great focus on exploring the reactions of the different characters faced with difficult predicaments. The author pays attention to characterization and crafts a powerful portrait of the human psyche in the midst of harrowing vicissitudes. The descriptions are terrific and readers will develop a unique appreciation for imagery in Paula Welch's work as they follow these characters. The setting is fully and vividly drawn, with images of the natural environment, the earthquakes, and the broken ice taking on a life of their own through the pages. This is a tale of grit and resilience. The writing is confident and the theme of natural disasters, murder, survival, and humanity are boldly written. You will look forward to Welch's next book after reading Cloud Piercer.
