In Julia Crane's novel "Coexist", the reader leaves the world behind and enters an ethereal world of an imaginary and unearthly elven society in which elves cohabit, but live secretly amongst their human counterparts. Keegan, a sixteen-year-old girl who is born into a family of extremely gifted elves, is betrothed to Rourk, a young warrior elf, who is also gifted. In the elven society, one's soul-mate is predetermined at birth, and when the children reach the age of eighteen, they are allowed to meet and wed. Although Keegan and Rourk are not supposed to meet until Keegan turns eighteen, fate intervenes beforehand, as Keegan's younger brother Thaddeus has the gift of prophesy, and dreams of an upcoming battle that will be fought between the coexisting light and dark elves involving a tragic event that will change the course of all of their lives. At that time, Rourk elects to protect Keegan, in order to keep her safe from the elven dark forces, since she will play a key role in the coming war between the dark and light elves. An ancient divination deeply entwines Keegan's family and the future of their society. Somehow they must find a way to thwart fate and win the battle, without the loss of Keegan. With war brewing, and dark forces forming an alliance, will Keegan and Rourk ever have the life together that they both yearn for?  With so much at stake for the elves of the light, the upcoming battle is crucial in the survival of these enchanting characters that mirror our daily lives.

I enjoyed Julia Crane’s book “Coexist” so much that I purchased the second book in the series entitled “Conflicted: Keenan’s Chronicles #2”. I was so intrigued by the story that I had to know what is going to happen! Keegan and her family draw the reader in, which is something that I really liked because it gives the reader a different viewpoint on the elven community and how their lives work. From the beginning of the book, I was drawn into the story and felt invested in it. The mythology is beautiful and the story line is believable. I really felt for Keegan. “Coexist” is a quick, fun read that mirrors mythical creatures acting like normal teenagers. The plot line is interesting and noteworthy. I will definitely follow this series.
