Trying to make sense out of the mess that has locked down the government of the United States and brought the most divisive rift between two cultures in American history is not an easy task. However in Conservatives Are from Mars; Progressives from Venus by M.E. Brines, defining the two rivals and their views will bring one closer to some sense of order. Where Conservatives espouse the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and consequently limited government, Progressives believe that there are only three kinds of people: those who are enlightened and want to use government to do good, those who are enlightened and want to use power to do evil and those who are victims of the evildoers. Against this backdrop, how is the debate ever going to be settled? What is certain, however, is that the lines are drawn and the combatants are dug in deeply and ready for the coming battle. The greater question is whether or not it will be resolved peacefully.

M.E. Brines has hit the nail on the head in presenting the views and definitions of the two combatants. His dictionary of Progressive and Conservative terms is a very handy addition to the book and further enhances the dichotomy of the two belief systems. The frustration of the opposing cultures and the war of words which has been a part of the debate over the past three decades as government regulations and programs grow more rapidly than the economy can support them is not being settled between Republicans and Democrats, because both sides of the aisle actually lean toward the progressive point of view. It is actually a war against conservatives and other non-progressives (hence: powerful evildoers or blind victims) who are simply unable to find a point of reason between them. Enlightening, concise and a brilliant evaluation of the cultural war that is plaguing the nation and the world in the twenty-first century.
