In Jessica Hemingway's Consumed, something is eating away at the residents of a town crippled with drought in New Zealand. Its victims die an agonising death at an alarming speed. Detective Ashley North is the only one assigned to the case. Her tenacity is required to solve this mystery against the odds. As more victims are struck down, Ashley wonders if she will ever save the town from total decimation. What is the connection between these people? And where has this 'virus' originated from?

Jessica Hemingway has penned a compelling tale in Consumed that could rival the present masters of this genre. Despite the gripping nature of Consumed, I found the writing style particularly easy to read. I was quite a way into the novel before I thought I had the answer to the 'virus.' But, Jessica Hemingway added a few more twists and turns that kept me guessing right until the very end. The characters are interesting and have intriguing histories. Characters are one of the most important factors of a novel, and Consumed delivers in this respect. It encourages you to care for their lives and root for their success. Is there going to be a sequel? There is definitely the potential for a continuation. I will make sure I am one of the first in line, in that case.

Consumed is a novel that defies your need to get on with other things. It demands your undivided attention until it has satisfied your quest for resolution. In other words, don't consider putting down Consumed until it has totally consumed you.
