Countdown: Cannon Steel by John P. Szeker is a thrilling, fast paced tale that pits two forces against the United States: terrorism and a comet that threatens to strike the Eastern Seaboard. As government officials scramble to thwart the dual threats, an insightful Midwestern pastor discovers that the true enemy is one far older and bolder than anything man can contrive. Faith and government collide as experts on both sides work desperately to thwart not only the dual threats to their homeland, but a far more forceful enemy. Story lines weave together to form a bigger tale that is more relevant than ever in a society that seeks to quash it: can you stand by your convictions, no matter what?

Countdown: Cannon Steel is an excellent and well written novel. John P. Szeker is serious about weaving correct details into a complex plot that simplifies into the old-fashioned battle between good and evil as the plot lines converge. The characters are well developed and realistic, as they have personal issues that they’re dealing with on top of the national threats they face. If you enjoyed the Left Behind series in the '90s, then you’ll love Countdown: Cannon Steel. It demonstrates that actions have consequences and that things can work out for good if your intentions are right without being “preachy” or judgmental. Faith is a crucial element in this book, but it’s well balanced with other elements of the plot and avoids cliches and stereotypes that usually turn me off Christian fiction. This is an excellent novel, and I highly recommend it to any reader, regardless of your genre preferences.
