Cousins, by Mary Ellen Carlson, is an adventure-filled picture book for young children. Brothers Andrew and Benjamin join their cousins Aaron and Timothy at their Grandma and Grandpa Brown's house for summer. This is something they did every year and this year they decided they would go camping in the woods. They packed up all their sleeping gear and headed out to find a good spot to set up. The boys got tired quickly and decided to go straight to sleep. Whilst they were sleeping soundly, a loud noise came from outside their tent. All of them wondered what it could be. After being spooked, Andrew bravely investigated where the noise is coming from by sticking his head out of the tent. What caused the noise they all heard and what will it mean for the boys' camp out?

Cousins was an enjoyable book to read. Children are going to have a great time with this simple story by Mary Ellen Carlson. I loved that the author based her book on cousins as I was close to my cousins as a child and it made me think back to all the adventures we had together, as well as how much fun it was. Spending quality time together as a family is important and this book highlights that. The illustrations by the talented Wes Bossman are works of art. I loved how he has created each character to be completely different as this makes their personalities stand out more throughout the story. I recommend this book to any child who has a close friendship with their cousins, and maybe they'll be inspired to go on a camping trip too.
