Detective Alex Cross is on an emotional roller coaster. The love of his life, Bree, has accepted his proposal of marriage. Already a blended family, they anxiously look ahead to becoming one legally and forever. Of course this is when his nemesis would turn up but Kyle Cross has gone to great lengths to change his appearance and blend back in to Cross' life. FBI Max Siegel is assigned to a baffling, frightening case that has snipers taking down "foxes in the chicken house". Little does Cross know that the biggest fox is his new coworker. Then, when things seem like they cannot get more baffling, the Numbers Killer starts up again, Cross' ex-wife decides to show up unannounced, and Kyle Cross begins calling not just the detective. He is also tormenting Bree, calling on her cell phone to taunt and frighten.

This is an extremely exciting, nail-biting story that leaves the reader guessing, cringing, anticipating and shocked. The lengths that Kyle Cross goes to get even with the man who was once his friend is unfathomable and the depths of darkness from which the plot is pulled is truly something of a great imagination.

I reviewed the audio book, which included a bonus CD of "Double Cross", the story before the story as it were. Although I enjoyed it as much as "Cross Fire", I wish I would have realized that "Double Cross" was the book before as it ties the whole situation together. Even with that in mind, I was completely captivated and look forward to more audio books from the author and the actors!

Alex Cross returns in this book for another adventure. This time he has plans to get married to Bree Stone, but before they can get on with their marriage plans, a sharpshooter kills 2 well-known, but dirty and underhanded Washington, D.C. politicians. Then a couple more crooked politicians meet their demise. Many believe the gunman is a hero, others think the gunman is crazy!

The public and politicians become scared and wonder who is next. They become afraid to appear in public, afraid they may get caught in the crossfire. Max Siegel from the FBI gets called in to help Alex Cross get to the bottom of the murders, but Max seems to be questioning everything Alex does, and the leads Alex seems to find.

Alex believes the gunman is a professional, maybe with army or marksmanship training, and he doesn't believe the gunman is working alone. The gunman seems to have inside information on the movements of all of his victims, and probable victims.

All of a sudden Max Siegel does an about face, and suspiciously becomes helpful; then Alex receives a phone call from his worst enemy, Kyle Craig! Now he has to deal with a serial killer, Max Siegel, Kyle Craig who wants to kill his entire family along with Bree, and whoever the mastermind is behind the murders, plus his upcoming wedding. What will become of Washington, D.C., and all it's inhabitants including Alex Cross??

This was a very interesting audio book to listen to, I didn't want to quit listening. I really enjoyed the suspense and the story line. I rate this book a 5 out of 5. Great work James Patterson!
