The love between a father and son is unconditional and rewarding. But what if the son is a lion cub and the dad is a donkey? Louie lives with his donkey friends and families. One day he finds an injured lion cub all alone. When he administers first aid, the lion cub calls Louie, Daddy. It’s a warm feeling and Louie takes it to heart. When no lion parents come to claim their cub, Louie takes the cub home with him, calling him Zozo. The other donkeys aren’t too happy, especially when the young lion cub starts causing all kinds of mischief. The nearby foxes aren’t happy either, especially when Louie scares them away with lion-like roars so Zozo can feed on the foxes' catch. What do you think happens when Zozo’s mother finally does appear?

Vedika Agrawal and Kunal Das have written and illustrated a heartwarming story about an unexpected father-son combo. Daddy Donkey and His Little Son is a powerful story about the everlasting bond of love. The plot develops through the adventures and worries of a donkey raising a lion cub, to the return of the cub’s mother, Louie’s encroaching old age, and a passionate reunion that will bring tears of joy to the reader’s eyes. The colorful illustrations help carry this charming story to its beautiful conclusion. At the end of the book, there are some fun activities, including a maze to find Zozo and questions the reader can answer about their own dad. Young readers will learn about the many types of love that can happen, even if the parent (guardian) and child are not biologically related. Beautifully told.
