Dark Heirloom, by J.D. Brown, begins with a young woman thrust into a world of which she knows nothing and has no idea whom she can trust. Essentially whisked from a Chicago street after a violent attack by vampires, Ema wakes up in a medieval castle as an unwanted guest of the king of the area’s vampire population. After learning that she was actually born a vampire, Ema tries to come to grips with that knowledge and learns how to use the many different abilities she slowly discovers. A tense relationship with the king and friendship with his brother keep Ema guessing about her possible fate, since she cannot leave the island or go back to the life she had. Through reading old texts in the castle library, Ema discovers things she wishes she could forget but does gain some idea about what her life will now be like as she struggles to understand what she is supposed to do.

J.D. Brown has created much more than the typical vampire story in Dark Heirloom. There is a tremendous depth of background that adds considerably to this tale without taking anything away from the action and forward movement of the plot. There is plenty of humor, romance, and some tense scenes all within the supernatural atmosphere of life in a vampire clan. Brown uses the characters’ past to strongly impact the present and leave a tremendous problem for the future as all the characters adjust to drastic changes and try to understand their places in the new dynamics of the clan. Well written and hard to put down, Dark Heirloom is a must-read for fans of the supernatural.
