Dead of Winter continues the story begun in Book I: The Fall. The Fall sets the stage for the rest of the series. A virus was released and spread globally. Those infected become the living dead, zombies. The zombies favorite meal was humans. In Book II we see a changed world. In one scene a character says “we are watching evolution.” Even the animals have evolved into vicious monsters willing to attack an SUV. There were few survivors of the plague. Those few are desperate, hiding and trying to decide what to do next. We follow the plight of several different groups as they struggle to stay alive.

The plague was bad enough; then came the snow. It was bitter cold and food was scarce. The survivors’ instinct told them to must head south. However, as the snow melted the Wraiths (fleshies, zombies) came to life. The living dead had sharp teeth and tore their prey to pieces leaving nothing but bone behind. Those that managed to escape with just a bite, were infected with the virus and destined to become a member of the living dead.

Dead of Winter is book II of The Rift series. There will be four books to this series. I strongly suggest you read these books in order. This book does not and is not meant to stand alone. I purposely left my summary vague. I do not want to ruin the plot for the next reader. There are several sub plots to this book. Each group of survivors had their own story to tell. The author skillfully weaves the subplots together to create a thrilling plot. My one complaint is the editing. I found several errors where the author used the wrong word such as die or dye. In this tale the author demonstrates the true nature of humans. Some are evil and some are good, and sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference. The descriptions of the empty cities were exquisite. I could see the empty skyscrapers, the automobile lots, and the roads covered with cars piled up in wrecks with the decaying bodies still inside. I was left wondering how I would react in their situation.
