The United States of America are not so united any longer in Death and The Divide by Lara Nance. The North and the South have a wall in between them, and each side has their own set of prejudices about people from the other side. But when seagulls and whales suddenly start eating their own species, and when a boatload of fishermen turn into cannibals, the border becomes less of a problem. A solution needs to be found. Some (more or less) brilliant scientists come together to find a solution. Unfortunately, there is also a terror group that wants to use the mutated gene for their own purposes: the perfect biological weapon to strike terror into people's hearts. In addition, the governments start getting out of control and want to keep the cure from each other if one was ever found. What path will the scientists choose in this kind of environment?

Lara Nance did a great job with Death and The Divide. Not only is the book well written and edited, it also contains a plot that just keeps you interested. There was a plot twist that even I did not see coming - and I've read hundreds of books. I enjoyed how naturally everything flowed; nothing in the plot felt forced or out of line. You do not often find such a nice progression in books. I really enjoyed how everything moved forward, how the characters interacted, and how every character truly was his/her own person. I also wish more people would understand what Lara Nance clearly understands: it is important that characters have emotions, but that you show them without always telling the reader straight away. In this novel, you do get attached to the characters, you want to know what happens next, and you'll actually feel satisfied with the ending.
