"Defensive Wounds" is one of a series by Lisa Black. You may benefit from reading previous books (if you want to know more about the main character of Theresa McLean) but this novel stands on its own as a thriller which may keep you up reading long into the wee hours of the morning. McLean goes to a ritzy hotel in which her daughter works after having received word about a murder. It seems someone in Cleveland has a grudge against a defense attorney and as it so happens, the hotel is hosting a convention of legal professionals. Of course, this makes for a wealth of possibilities in the world of crime. The main target is an attorney who is alienated from nearly everyone in law enforcement. Defense attorney Corrigan has falsified evidence and made mincemeat of prosecutors in her much-publicized trials. These results in nasty people being set free 3

to "do it again," that is until someone has their way with Corrigan.
As always, Black has several themes going on and this is nearly enough to make most mystery readers mystery sleuths. When two more deaths occur in rapid succession, the reader is mandated to keep track of clues so that they can all come together in the end. Black does this with skill and authority. Fortunately, not enough clues are offered to make the reader put down the book prior to the last chapter. Cheers to Lisa Black for another mind-teasing mystery novel.
