Author Biography

JJ began her writing career long before she realized she would become an author. At the time, writing poetry became a necessity, which was dictated by her emotions. She kept her writings secret and only shared them with a very few close friends and family. Many of the poems listed in her book were written twenty plus years ago. Although ‘Deflowered Lyric’ is her first published book, she is far from a novice. She has written numerous reports, articles, business plans and the like for a 35-year career corporate job. She recalls a manager expressing to her that her writings were like reading a book. This was preparing her for this moment in time. She credits God for revealing her purpose. She believes everything that happened in her life was designed and orchestrated to manifest itself at this particular time. Stepping out on faith, she retired from her job to walk in her purpose as ordered by her heavenly father. When asked, why she would give up the security of permanent employment for the uncertainty of self-employment. She smiles and replies, “God said so.” She further explains her purpose is more than writing. “This is a movement to save our children from sexual abuse. I want to educate children and adults about this once forbidden subject that seems to be continually swept under the rug. Along with her corporate career, she was also featured in several national television and radio commercials. Her sultry voice afforded her an opportunity to land a few voice over jobs in the Washington, DC area as well as National spots.
J. J. is a northern woman at heart but has fallen in love with the South. She was born in Buffalo, New York and raised in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. She attended Frostburg State College in Frostburg, Maryland studying nursing. After changing her major to social work, she transferred to George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. After this, she married, birthed and raised two children and began her career until being offered a job promotion in Dallas, Texas. The warmer climate was her motivation to accept the transfer to the Great State of Texas. However, she remains a devoted Pittsburgh Steeler and Washington Redskins fan.
She is the proud mother of four adults, three boys and one girl of which two sons are from her blended family. She also shares her journey with as she describes, “Six perfect grandchildren.” Her prayer is that God will bless and protect them while she educates and helps to prepare them for life by passing on her faith and her own life experiences.
Walk on J. J. according to your purpose into your destiny. Those who have the pleasure of knowing you are positive that whatever you set your sights on, you will achieve. Having devoted almost 36 years to one company to help them fulfill their goals, it is about time you put the energy, compassion and knowledge into you own dreams and your PURPOSE!

Deflowered Lyric by J.J. Staples is a disturbing novel that speaks about the realities of the society we live in. Sexual abuse is rampant in our society and this story is sketched around three characters, Lyric, Jada and Judith, who all undergo abuse at the hands of trusted people. The author explores a topic that is getting out of control in current society, where the abused carry that secret with them and end up being troubled. Readers are exposed to the pain caused by child abuse and it is a warning signal to parents, family members and friends to be watchful and careful with the society we live.

The author has done an excellent job of exposing the harsh realities of sexual abuse and the book is a good read for those who have experienced it and are healing from abuse. The book is thought provoking and an eye opener. The interspersing of poetry and prose in the writing makes it quite effective. All three characters, with their varied abuses and reactions, touch the hearts of readers. One keeps it a secret, but with the other two, an adult steps in to help. All three incidents reveal the trauma the victim goes through. I recommend this book to everyone. It is a must-read for all of us to be more aware of the dangers lurking around children and be more protective of their safety. It is indeed an inspirational book!

As a foster mother, the harsh reality of sexual abuse in children is evident in my life. It’s devastating and often so hard for me to understand. I make a point to read books with characters who face tragedies as children, in attempt to understand my own children’s pains. This book was yet another of my deep-spiritual reads, that informed me to the awful realities of child sexual abuse.

The book was unique in many aspects, but one part I enjoyed was the fact each chapter began with a poem. Which took the horridness of the backdrop of the story, and made it into something beautiful. I felt as though this was a very healing approach to take to the book, as it was obviously not the most happy-go-lucky story, but amidst all of the pages were very beautiful poems. The fact they were written amidst the heartbreaking storyline, brings a sense of beauty to the book that is hard to explain- but it truly did add this subtle healing effect to the pages- because you realized that there was still this childlike essence to the story. Poetry brought the innocence back.

Deflowered Lyric is a hard to read tale about three different children who all face sexual abuse. Each one faces the hardships different. One child keeps it a secret, another child tells immediately, and Lyric was saved by another adult who realized the problem and stepped in. As you can imagine, there are significant differences in the effects the sexual abuse has on these children. Many times adults may lump every ‘sexual abuse of a child’ case into one generalization- assuming each child will be traumatized in the same way. But this book explained in clear detail that that is entirely not true, and different events and experiences can have a life-long effect on the child’s capability to heal from the events of their past.

Although this book is a very emotional read, I feel like any adult who works with children should read it. Whether you are a social worker or a teacher or a volunteer at your local Boys and Girls Club- reading this book can give you insight into the lives of children you know who have faced sexual abuse. It can help you understand their hardships and their behavior- and ultimately give you a few of the tools you need to truly connect with that child on a level that will allow them to heal and trust again. As a foster mother, I treasure this book very deeply. Any book that can help me more deeply comprehend what my children have gone through is one that I am very thankful for. And this book did just that. I highly recommend it, and will probably find myself rereading it again and again.

Wow, what a compelling book. I had the pleasure of reading this book during the weekend. Oh my God, the story our innocent children are left to carry. Our children becomes adult and often time are hurting with the emotional pain and anguish of innocence lost. This book took me on a journey I was not prepared for. I found lyric to be a strong individual in her walk to exposing her family secret. Lyric ultimately had family and friends and a strong spiritual belief who believed in her and help her to deal with the pain of molesting, mistrust and self image to name a few. This book showed the worst of individual and the best of individual if you can allow yourself to become open and trust that one special person and allow God to heal and take away your pain.. Their are so many character I enjoy learning about and reading. This story offer so many twist and turns I just could not put it down. This is a good book for anyway to read of all ages - be ready to pause and think - at least that what I had to do throughout the book. I read on average 2 -3 books a month, in the past year this is THE BEST BOOK I READ. As I sit her to write this review so many images and story lines are popping up in my head that I cannot stay focus or tell them all. In the end, family, friends, friendship, self image, hurt, being ashamed, loved, forgiveness and the most important being in one's life "GOD" - spiritual teaching, learning and belief. Let me stop here - read the book - you won't be disappointed. Be prepared to be touched emotionally.

I had the good fortune of reading Deflowered Lyric prior to publication and each time I have read it since, it is more poignant, powerful and inspiring. The book is the moving and disturbing story of a child, Lyric, having to cope with a myriad of abuse and how it impacted her over the course of her life. It is a cautionary tale that brings to light the prevalence of child abuse in our society and is a testament to the resilience of the human heart and the impact of faith on overcoming adversity. It polarizes the atrocities too many children often suffer.
The book brought to mind the lyrics of a gospel song, “Be Grateful” which state, in part: “There is always someone worst off than you…” Perhaps anyone who reads this book will come away with a resolve to try to lessen the worse and participate in the fight to eradicate child abuse altogether. We must look to the children for inspiration.

This book is very touching. It's horrible that any child should have to endure such abuse. Children should be loved and protected, but it wasn't like that for Lyric. Read Lyric's story, you won't regret it!

Thank you Ms. Staples for bringing to light a problem that's so prevalent in our communities and families even today. This is a must read. This novel is inspirational, suspenseful, intriguing, and above all, educational on a very touchy subject. Sexual abuse, molestation, and incest are all touched upon. The harsh reality of this usually unspoken topic, is brought to light in this novel, and overwhelms you with the desire to continue reading. I was inspired by this read, as my background is in Human Services, and I have a drive to help others. Lyric, the main character, is a strong woman on a journey to make life better for others. I am somewhat sad that I have completed the novel, and am having to wait for the sequel, but I will eagerly wait with anticipation.

I immediately fell in love with Lyric. She is the best friend everyone should have. I hope she ends up with Dr. Maxey, she deserves it ! This book was sad and entertaining at the same time and certainly does raise the awareness that should be out there. The author really does know how to draw you in ! I can't wait for J.J. Staples future works.

I found this book had me totally involved from page one. You immediately want to read on. As you continue, your heart is filled, broken, and taken on a continuous spiritual rollercoaster. Every personal experience you have had or heard of in your own family, comes to the surface. Every character is someone you know, or someone you have been at some point in life.

Child molestation is too well known to us all. This book brings it to light in a way that is so awesome! It reminds us of the healing of speaking up and out, and the amazing power of God and friendships in our lives. As a poet, I also thoroughly enjoyed the inspiration the poems served in this writing. You find yourself smiling, laughing and crying-sometimes simultaneously! You definitely find yourself thinking of all that we need to do to help stop this in our children's futures. Life for children should be filled with love, learning and enough fun to last a lifetime.

Let the silence be broken!! We must pray and stay on the journey. Thank you again for this awesome book!!

I couldn't believe what I was reading as I traversed the path through Deflowered Lyric, a tale of not one incident of childhood sexual abuse but of several. What these children had to undergo was both terrifying and insightful.

Staples bravely undertakes the part of abuse most are too scared to cover: the shame of what naturally happens when someone is touched sexually. That single fact is the thing that upsets and disturbs the abused the most - that even though they mentally denied their abusers, they feel because their body did what bodies do, some part of them wanted this. That partial culpability destroys them mentally.

Highly recommended for anyone healing from abuse or with an abused loved one. That person deserves as much understanding and love from you as possible.

I believe this book should get 10 stars. I couldn't put my Kindle down. We had our lights go out for 3 hours and thank God I had my Kindle to finish reading this book. What a writer! Hard to believe this is her first book. Can't wait and hope for a follow-up book. My heart pounded so loud I could hear it. Child sexuality is real and we must keep our ears open. This abuse will never end if we keep our eyes shut and mouths closed. Thanks for this very God inspired book. It's was truly hard to put down.

Love, Loss and Sexual Abuse......Not easy subjects but real ones! I had the pleasure of reading this book pre publication and it is very intriguing, thought provoking and filled with intrigue! It is rare when a writer puts so much of themselves on paper that you can see her bleed, feel her pain and experience this story like you are actually there. It really spoke to my spirit about LIFE and just why and how things happen to us to help shape OUR STORY!! This masterfully written novel by Author JJ Staples has very loving, funny but serious characters who deal with real life issues involving child sexual abuse, emotional and physical pain, love, heartache and triumph.....It is filled with poetry and prose all while thirsting your imagination with suspense for the unknown. I think anyone who reads this book can relate to the characters in one way or another by experience or association with this very moving story. A REAL LIFE PAGE TURNER FOR SURE!!!!! 5 Stars!!
