Déjà Vu and Fritters Too: Home from Afghanistan, a Marine Falls for a Girl He Cannot Pursue, by Janet Sharp, is a novel that begins late at night in Modesto, CA, near a shabby hotel in San Pablo Avenue. Jenny Corey, a young volunteer, is raped by three men. But David Moreno, a former Marine with tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, stops her attackers. Afterwards, he brings Jenny back to his apartment, a temporary shelter set up for him by the California Police Department. Moreno is on a mission to infiltrate a notorious gang headed by his childhood friend, Paul Rodriguez aka Paco. David falls in love with Jenny. But he can’t reveal the truth about his life. Readers will be surprised how this love story and criminal fiction turns out.

The cover is apt for this excellent book, filled with action and adventure. California is the perfect setting. Janet Sharp is a gifted writer who drew me into the story with her use of dialogue and her streetsmart characters. She was raised in Berkeley, California. Sharp has a bachelor’s degree from Fresno State and a master’s degree from the University of Iowa. Déjà Vu and Fritters Too is Sharp’s first fiction book. Janet and her husband Bill published Generations: A History of the Sharp and Bliss Families from 1776 to 2006. Déjà Vu and Fritters Too is highly recommended.

Romance, good guys, bad guys, crimes and suspense can all be found in "Déjà vu and Fritters Too" by Janet Sharp. David Moreno was a child living in the bad side of town being shifted from one foster home to another. He joins the Marines as soon as he can and the readers meet him as he is returning home and joining the police force. Jennifer Corey has led a sheltered life. Her parents make sure she has every advantage. We meet Jennifer as she is heading off to college life. David’s assignment is as an undercover cop going back to his old neighborhood and friends and infiltrating their drug and gun businesses. Jennifer, in addition to her college studies, has signed up to work at St. Vincent’s soup kitchen. Jennifer and David meet when Jennifer is being attacked and raped by some neighborhood thugs and David comes to the rescue. The two feel an attachment towards each other but David must keep his distance because of his undercover work. Jennifer makes new friends at the University and soon finds Ian, the perfect first boyfriend (perhaps?). David is trying to fit into the gang and move higher in the ranks until he is part of the drug operations so that he can report back to his handlers and put an end to the illegal operations. Along the way we cheer on Jennifer’s friends and dislike Paco Rodriguez and the other members of his gang.

I found myself cheering on Jennifer and David and hoping that eventually a relationship would develop. Janet Sharp has written a book with a great plot and strong likeable characters that capture your attention and pull you right into the story. I was sad saying goodbye to the friends when I reached the last page. This is a five star winner and I can’t wait for Sharp’s next book.
