Dime by Luis Figueredo is an engrossing legal thriller with well-crafted characters and a strong plot. When Pierce Evangelista’s ex-wife, Jordan, calls and requests help in fixing a family matter, Pierce’s first response is, “I don’t do criminal law,” but the stunning sight of Alexis Laporte changes everything. The Harvard-educated lawyer doesn’t know that he is about to be drawn into a conflict between two powerful entities: the Venezuelan drug cartel and the DEA. In Curacao Prison, a criminal awaits extradition. Juan Carlos has very sensitive and damaging information about the cartel, information that the DEA wants badly and that the drug cartel will do everything and anything to keep secret. Juan Carlos is an indispensable piece in the game and Evangelista must protect him from both the DEA and the Venezuelan cartel. The stakes are really high.
The strength of Luis Figueredo’s writing is in the ability to create a conflict that allows the characters to evolve as they deal with challenging situations. The opening is strong and the reader is introduced to the key characters in the narrative and their motivation. There is something intriguing about the first meeting between Pierce and Alexis and I wanted to see how the relationship between the two evolved through the story. The author skillfully uses this intrigue to build suspense between the two characters, at least at the emotional level. Dime is well-written and features memorable characters, a setting that is atmospheric and breeds conflict, and plot twists that are entertaining. It is a wonderful read, indeed.
