Author Biography

Dinosaur Racing is one of the books in my "Red Racecar" series for young readers. I created this series because the books that got me reading, motor-racing adventures I'd purchase through the likes of the Weekly Reader book club, don't seem to exist anymore, or certainly aren't publicized. I work in a high school program for survivors of brain injury. They're usually boys who like to get their hands dirty. They don't think they like to read. The Red Racecar books are changing their minds.

Dinosaur Racing is a comedy-adventure novella written by Thom Ring. Sick of being so utterly and completely bored at the Golden Acres Residential Community – where the most exciting action the residents ever see is a great game of Bingo - Tony Stella decides that he has a lot more living to do. Known by many as a legend in the racing circuit, Tony decides to put together a new racer. After locating all that he needs, Tony and his crew set out to make his new machine the fastest, and most powerful, the world has ever seen. He secures a young driver, Dale Hammond, who’d just been unceremoniously dumped by his former sponsor – and who often questions every aspect of Tony’s thinking in regards to the race car he’d just built. Once on the track, Dale is reluctant to take advice from the over-the-hill crew when they advise him to drive in a manner which is contrary to his own, but once he eases into it and follows their advice, Dale quickly discovers that these old folks truly know what they are talking about.

Fast-paced and action-packed, Dinosaur Racing is not only filled with the thunderous roar of the Speed Bowl, but is also packed with humor which is unparalleled in any book I have ever read. Thom Ring’s tale of an aged racing champion, who decides to utilize all of his skills and prove that he isn’t so washed up, is brilliantly written, showing how you aren't stamped with a used-by date unless you truly believe it. The know-all attitude of an upcoming young driver, who is brought down a peg or two by a true, seasoned champion, is a tale which kept me engrossed from beginning to end. I was fully able to empathize with the folks who’d been retired to the old folk’s home, regardless that they had a whole lot more living to do, as well as the young racing driver who thought he knew it all, only to discover that sometimes it is best to listen to those who are older and wiser as their advice might be worthy of a gold star. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dinosaur Racing, and recommend it those aged 15 years and over, who enjoy comedy, action and drama through the thunderous roar of speedway antics.
