Ava breaks her promise to her family and contacts Daniel, a merman who saved her life years ago. They fall in love, causing problems for Daniel’s species, which wants to remain mythical for survival. Ava becomes more confused after discovering there are mermaids living secretly in her hometown. Who are they, and why does her family want to keep this from her and the public? This puts a strain on her family relationship. The couple’s love is strongly tested as there are persons willing to do anything to see this relationship end. Ava tries to sort out her emotions while exploring a new world undersea. Discovering Daniel is written by Nadine Christian.

Nadine Christian was able to make the characters come to life in the enchanting plot she created, and I became fond of them. She writes creatively on sirens and mermen, and that made the story more unique. I was able to visualize the beautiful underwater surroundings and activities taking place in the story. The book was engaging from the very beginning and the dialogue flowed naturally. One of the things I like about the author is her ability to bring out the emotions of the characters, thus making me feel their happiness or sadness. I thought the ending was very clever, leaving readers in appropriate suspense. Discovering Daniel is entertaining and original in concept, and there is no doubt that it is sure to appeal to young adults who like romantic fantasy fiction.
