A sweeping novel of historical fiction, Waheed Rabbani’s Doctor Margaret in Delhi, the second book of the Azadi series, follows the trials and tribulations of Dr. Margaret Wallace, an American doctor in 1850s India. After losing her cherished husband, Robert, in the Crimean War, Margaret, pregnant with her third child, decides to move to India to be closer to her estranged parents who are Presbyterian missionaries there. She has also accepted a post as the first female physician at the Delhi Hospital, a position she will take up once her child is born. Her old enemy, the demoted Lieutenant Albert Miller, who was ultimately responsible for Robert’s death in the war, transfers to India and seems determine to settle past scores with her; life is only complicated that much further.

Waheed Rabbani’s newest novel is a delightful read. Detailing the conflict between the ruling British and India’s former ruling class during a time period of great conflict and unrest in this fascinating country, I truly felt that I came away from reading Doctor Margaret in Delhi with a better understanding of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 as well as the tensions between the British empire and the people of India. This is not a fast-paced book, but the details are so carefully and beautifully wrought that reading it is well worth your time. I truly look forward to going back to read the first book in this series, Doctor Margaret’s Sea Chest and, as I understand that this book is the second of a trilogy, I cannot wait for Book Three to be released. Waheed Rabbani, I hope you’re busy writing!
