Dog on Stilts by James Thorp is about Medium Dog, who is just ordinary and does not stand out in any way. He wants to be noticed in a world filled with wonderful dogs of every shape and color. One day he comes out on stilts and realizes that everyone notices him. Finally he is happy that he has become extraordinary, unlike the average everyday dog. But then he realizes it does not last and he is back to being his original self. It's a beautiful story of self-acceptance when Medium Dog realizes he is just wonderful as he is.

The story has a lovely concept of self-acceptance and the author has expressed it beautifully through the story of Medium Dog. The dog's elation at being taller and bigger than anyone else around him, and being able to do the kinds of things no one else can, is exhilarating. The illustrations enhance the author's thoughts very well and take young readers on a colorful journey along with Medium Dog. Readers are shown the advantages of being tall and reaching out to things which no one else can, and finally how Medium Dog crashes down from the heights to the ground, facing reality. The book will make a good bedtime storybook and it can also be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. The valuable lessons learned by Medium Dog are indeed helpful to readers, giving them a better understanding of life.
