Author Todd Parr offers an opportunity to help preschoolers learn how to count from one to ten. In Doggy Kisses 1 2 3, a child is introduced to a dog who just loves to kiss children. There is a number with a rhyming couplet in which the dog licks a particular part of the child's body. The couplets are cute and the rhyming is consistent in cadence such that the child just may join in after a few readings. The colors are marvelous and truly attention-getting! The dog is precious and non-threatening. Obviously, the child welcomes the interaction.

Doggy Kisses 1 2 3 is an educational book which will help all preschool children become interested in numbers. The numbers are clear and attractive. Soon, the adult reader can point to a number and help the child recite the correct number before reading the rhyming couplet. The child is also introduced to the names of sounds and objects, making the book additionally helpful for the youngster attempting to acquire simple language. The child also learns to name parts of the body upon which the kisses are placed. One of the things I really liked was the repetition of the written number. On the illustrated page adjacent to the number were drawn the same number of colorful hearts, suggesting the love the dog had for the child upon whom it was bestowing the kisses. This is a fun and colorful book which all parents would be wise to include in the family library. The book is child-friendly and will withstand multiple readings as well as explorations by young readers.
