Double Helix: Tempest by R. Patricia Wayne combines elements of sci-fi, epic fantasy, and dystopia to create a plot-rich and character-driven story that will arrest the attention of readers and entertain them beyond measure. It’s set in the future, in 2256, many years from now. With Mars transformed into a form of tropical paradise, the colonists have just one thing to worry about — the fact that 95% of the population is composed of women while the few 5 % of men are sterile. To find a cure for the mutation, Chancellor Janna sends her only daughter and heiress to the throne to Earth to seek a cure. Can the fifteen-year-old Aura survive the challenges of her mission and can the people of the Colony avoid looming tyranny and dictatorship? Things only get worse with the tempest, the vortex that could change life and history irrevocably.

R. Patricia Wayne is a gifted writer and I was so taken by the author’s ability to weave elements from different genres into her story. The characters are compelling to watch as they seek answers to the challenges facing their world. Double Helix: Tempest also features powerful themes, including human mutations, political intrigue, the struggle for survival, and many others. The plot is well-imagined and it is written to keep the reader hooked till the end. The intense drama, coupled with the powerful conflict, makes the book a must-read, a very gripping one. I was hugely entertained by this story. It’s a great read.
