I must admit, I do love a great novel of historical fiction. To me, there’s almost nothing better than curling up on a rainy afternoon and finding yourself in a completely different time period, a different world, really. Often a place with manners better than what we have now, romance and chivalry, and unsurpassed drama. That’s exactly what I found when I read the new work by author Tess Thompson, Duet for Three Hands.

The story is set in the American South in the late 1920s to early 1930s and follows the story of Nathaniel Fye, a former concert pianist, as he is integrated into his wife’s family, the Bellmonts, and adjusts to his wife’s unstable mentality and ever increasing desires and ambitions. Nathaniel wants nothing more than to find a protégé, someone he can mentor in his one true love, the piano. Nathaniel also becomes privy to the secret of his new brother-in-law, Whitmore, that he is in love with the daughter of the Bellmont’s maid, Jeselle, a love that must be hidden as Jeselle is black. In a world filled with secrets and intrigue, author Tess Thompson has created a truly engaging and fantastic read.

I very much enjoyed this book. Well written with great pacing and wonderful character development, Tess Thompson creates a world in Duet for Three Hands that the reader will find themselves completely engrossed in. Writing of the difficulties and secrecy of an interracial relationship in this time period in the deep South with an empathy and sympathy second to none, Thompson’s skill as a writer is second to none. Duet for Three Hands is a book that would appeal to anyone who loves great fiction, historical or not. This was the first book that I’ve read by Tess Thompson, but it certainly won’t be the last.
