As a fan of sci-fi and fantasy, what could be more fun than putting the much beloved fiction races in space; elves, dwarves, orcs, a djinn, and of course, humans. The captain of Elation-Cru, Variel Tuffman, is a hardy and street smart female human who is able to keep her crew in line to some extent. Together with her dwarfish pilot Orn, a grumpy elven engineer Ferra (who’s also Orn’s wife), her silent djinn friend Gene, the orc doctor Monde, and the ship’s sarcastic A.I, WEST, the group stumbles into trouble when their elven assassin/renter needs to be rescued from Variel’s past enemy. The fact that they accidentally ‘kidnapped’ an intern technician also makes the situation messier.

Dwarves In Space by S.E. Zbasnik is action packed, fast paced and funny. It’s a fun, wacky flight across the universe with a plucky motley crew and a ship that always needs repairs. I liked the characters, particularly Variel and Orn, as well as the witty dialogue. The premise is grand and a great take on two of my favorite genres with a healthy dose of humor.

That said, the world building is not instantly conceivable. It took me a while to familiarize myself with it. The overall narrative is solid, even though some parts are slightly muddled and require a couple of rereads (which in this case, I don’t mind doing). On the whole, I enjoyed it. Despite some imperfections, Dwarves In Space is an entertaining read and I look forward to the sequel.
