Alex Clermont wrote "Eating Kimchi and Nodding Politely." Kimchi is a Korean dish of fermented vegetables and seasonings that he didn't care for. Alex is in South Korea teaching English to the Korean Children and later branches out to teaching adults. He deals with isolation until he becomes acquainted and learns more about the customs of the country. His sense of humor aids him with the acquainting process. He teaches first at a private school for younger children and then at a public school for older children. His good friends become the other teachers he works with and some of the adult students. He longs for romance but finds it hard to find except for occasional one night stands while he really wants a woman who will share his life.

What a delightful book! I wished it could have gone on and on. A look at a foreign country, South Korea, that made me feel I had been there. I agreed with Alex Clermont about his disdain for eating raw octopus but I do like kimchi which he did not. The book is a look into his loneliness when he first gets there and his delight in forming friendships. This is a story of the people he meets in South Korea and their reaction to him, a black American, who at first did not know much about the Korean language. Also it gives a feeling for his reaction to the Korean people he grew to enjoy very much. It is a great book and I feel this man will become an author of many more books.
