In "Echoes of the Storm" by Amanda Albright Still, Dash Gallagher is thankful her husband encouraged her to get a law degree before the 1900 Hurricane swept through Galveston. Her husband disappeared in the devastation. She attempts to establish herself as a lawyer to make ends meet. A client of hers is found dead and determining Larissa Dorfman’s death a murder, Dash is set on a careening course to find her killer. During her investigations she is made aware her deceased client led a life filled with scandal and this doesn’t help her reputation when she takes the case. She enlists the help of her landlord and Private Detective, L. Barker. The Detective decides to put aside preconceived notions of women and assists her though he has a related purpose of his own in the case. Dash’s persistence in culminating the adoption of two orphaned children clashes with a facet of corruption and roadblocks in solving the crime.

Amanda Albright's novel held my full attention from beginning to end in "Echoes of the Storm". Her skill to capture the reader shows she is a master of her craft. I felt I was right in sync with her main character, witnessing courage, determination and harrowing escapades throughout the suspenseful novel. The author brings one into the times and customs of the early 1900s and shows it is quite possible to survive all odds, with humor thrown in along the way. The story required careful research not only in presenting characters of that era but also of the aftermaths of the devastating Galveston storm of that century. Ms. Still jolts the reader forward at just the right times with her compelling prose. When all is said and done I can only look forward to reading more of Ms. Still’s novels in the 'Galveston Hurricane Mystery series'.
