Even Rain Is Just Water: A Memoir of Rejection, Revelation & Redemption is a well-written memoir about what it is like growing up in a dysfunctional family and the effects it has on everyone related. Lynette Davis tells us about her own journey as the unloved and unwanted daughter of a narcissistic mother, as well as her relationship with her sister who is the favored child. This book shows us a classic example of the Golden Child and Scapegoat Child syndrome in a typically narcissistic or dysfunctional family dynamic. The story is told in a more or less sequential manner as we learn about Lynette’s background and growing up in the era of segregation, the Civil Rights movement as the backdrop of her years, her mother’s vastly different treatment of her and her sister, the blatant favoritism, her desire to escape from her oppressive home environment, her marriage, raising her children, and finally how Lynette learns to accept reality.

I thought Even Rain Is Just Water was a gripping memoir written in a raw, honest style. I liked the psychological insights provided throughout this book. Emotional abuse and neglect can lead to a host of unresolved issues in adult life, often forever, including depression, anxiety disorders, interpersonal relationship difficulties, eating and addiction issues, and of course, a feeling of guilt, shame, or lack of self-worth. This story would be familiar to anyone who has been treated unfairly or differently as a child from their siblings. Through it all, Lynette provides a glimmer of hope and I appreciated the fact that she could rise above her past and provide a loving, nurturing environment for her children in spite of her past experiences.
