Nina Taylor, who suffered a mental breakdown, is fighting to keep her sanity and her family intact. Rodney is her husband and seemingly no longer interested in her. They have two little girls, Bree and Laila, whom they both love dearly. Nina’s best friend, Deja Johnson, has a checkered past, and it is unclear if she is a true friend of Nina’s, or has unwittingly placed her life in danger. Nina’s past also plagues her every day, as she struggles with memories of her brother, Isaiah, and his best friend, Damian. In Everything She Lost, written by Alessandra Harris, the relationships between Nina, Rodney and Deja are complex and intriguing. While Nina is faced with distressing and confusing situations, she finds constant support from her father. At the same time, Deja is faced with reconnecting with her mother, who also has a difficult past. How the past and the present affect and intersect with each other is one unique aspect of the story.

The plot in this book flows well, as bits of information from the past are integrated into the story line. Author Alessandra Harris has written a captivating and suspenseful novel in Everything She Lost. She introduces many characters, and each is well-developed. There is a good balance between verbal communication and inner thoughts. Her portrayal of Nina’s struggles with her recovery from a mental breakdown – as well as other people's negative perceptions of mental breakdowns – is authentic. This book is a page-turner, from beginning to end. The author captures the reader’s attention and engages it until the final chapter.
