What a delight to find that the title of this book - Everything Solid has a Shadow - was as intriguing as the writing. Beautifully written, this is the story of a marketing executive and part-time musician, Charlie Alessandro. He is a troubled soul, living in the shadow of an incident that has not only disturbed him since childhood, but impinged on his ability to relate to others. Without giving the plot away, the event that fundamentally changed both him and the direction of his life is gradually revealed in a hauntingly gripping way. The first person narrative allows the reader to observe the complex character of the main protagonist, with tantalising glimpses of the characters around him. Charlie comes across as someone who is drifting and unable to connect with those around him. Troubled by poignant dreams and worried he could have psychic powers, he slowly uncovers the truth as we see his relationships with girlfriend, Alisa, childhood friend, Willa, and casual friend, MariAngela, develop and change.

The narrative in this novel is a literary joy. It is well scripted and the language elevates the storyline well above the ordinary. Michael Antman's characters are multi-faceted and believable, the mystery compelling, and the psychology fascinating. I really enjoyed putting the pieces of the puzzle in place and, alongside the main character, trying to fathom the relevance of his past experiences and dreams. All in all, I felt completely drawn in and can highly recommend Everything Solid has a Shadow to those who want a story with great prose, interest and depth. Well done on an ace book.
