In Extracted, a YA steampunk novel by Tyler H. Jolley and Sherry D. Ficklin, Lex and Ember are two siblings on different sides of a time travel war. Lex is part of the Hollows, a smash-and-grab crew who snatch up items appearing in the wrong time-line. Ember is a part of the Institute, a time travel society run by Nikolai Tesla himself, or at least, his brain. With each having had their memory wiped during their first jump through time, both Lex and Ember have no idea of the other's existence, except for some vague memories and odd scars. When they do finally encounter each other, it causes them to question everything they believed to be be true about the war and the men that helm it.

The plot was pretty decent and I did enjoy trying to keep all the time-travel bits of logic in order as Lex and Ember jump from time to time, trying to fix a dangerous paradox that could destroy the fabric of time itself. A quick warning for those who like to flip to the back of the book and read the author notes first... Don't! It completely ruins the surprise of who Lex and Ember really are. But all that aside, Extracted was a very enjoyable read. I did wish that the steampunk aspects were expanded on more beyond corsets, top hats, and a coal-fueled wheelchair.

With lots of action, mysteries, and plot twists, Extracted is sure to entice steampunk and time travel fans. Anyone who's still desperate for answers by the book's end will be happy to note that Extracted is the first book in the Lost Imperials series. Hang tight for book two!
