Figler: My Imaginary Friend, a children’s story written by Erica Taylor and illustrated by Mr. Piecrust, is a short children’s story that is reflective and a great precursor to a discussion about insecurities, self-identity and courage. Figler is the child’s imaginary friend according to the child’s mother; however, the child says that Figler is everything that he is within himself. The story describes the child and Figler sharing contrasting traits that they each possess. Figler is able to do things that the child is not and he is more grown-up than the child is in several ways. Following the story there is a lesson plan included in the book. The lesson plan has vocabulary words, comprehensive questions and also critical thinking questions.

Erica Taylor has written a children’s book that is so much more than initially meets the eye. Figler: My Imaginary Friend is a cute, short children’s story that discusses a child and his imaginary friend. However, this imaginary friend is so much more than just that; Figler is always with the child as he is always there when the child looks in the mirror. This book illustrates so well the concept of self-identity and how he perceives himself and how he wants to be seen by others, as well as his perception of how others see him. I love that Figler is so different from the child, yet he exhibits characteristics that are attainable for the child and he gives the child courage. The lesson plan included in the book has so many good things that can be used in a small counseling group or individually with one’s child.
