Finding Alan Treadwell – Book 2 by Mabel Elizabeth Singletary is a story about a middle school child searching for friendship in the midst of constant bullying. The dedication statement correlates with the plot of the book – nice touch. The story is a mix of sadness in several chapters, pity in several chapters, coping with loss of a key member of the family and sheer delight in other chapters, which makes the book entertaining. Alan, the main character, faces challenges that so many kids face every day in life. Everyone has met an Under Gerald in their life, but the twist of his story is riveting and compelling. The characters of Craig, Marcus, and Hannah mesh with an especially thoughtful quote in the book, “... knowing that today always has a chance of being better than yesterday.”

This is a good book for parents to share with their pre-teens and a good book for educators to add to their classroom reading list, especially if they are managing a situation that involves a bully. It will teach that words hurt adults as much or more than it does kids and that “things on the surface aren’t always what they seem to be.” The book illustrates the role of resilience and positively fighting back in problem solving. The addition of a few illustrations may enhance the readability of the book. Chapters are short enough yet well developed to hold the attention of a middle school child or when reading to a group of children.
