Author Biography

Bobbie Falin wields magic, thwarts evil forces, pilots sleek ships through space, drinks and carouses with aliens in shabby station bars, and wanders the worlds of other writers with wide-eyed wonder—in her head. Here on Earth, well that's different. Here, she records Kaphri's adventures in the Starchild Series and complicates Gideon Rhue and Mei's life in Deformation. She still feeds the four local stray cats who show up for breakfast and dinner every day, and, yes, it's unreservedly true; if there was a space program to explore the stars, She’d be first in line.

Flashing Dark is a work of fiction in the science fiction, adventure, and interpersonal drama subgenres. It was intended for the general reading audience and was penned by author Bobbie Falin. In this emotionally charged and character-led drama, we meet Vivi Zant, who experienced unimaginable horrors and loss when she was younger. Now faced with the burden of a child she tried to rescue, who is wandering unprotected in a place where humans are forbidden, Vivi must summon all her smarts and courage to save the kid from a dire fate. But with no tech, no ship, and no support, taking on the whole of the Moneyworld solo is no mean feat, and she will have to risk it all.

This engrossing and high-stakes science fiction novel was a wonderful balance of character-driven storytelling and immersive world-building with a satisfying overall concept. I liked the many ways in which author Bobbie Falin brings realism to this sci-fi world, where even those trying to do the right thing can suffer from and also cause dire knock-on effects that devastate other people along the way. Vivi was a standout central protagonist, ambiguous in her loyalties to everything except the duty and sense of justice she felt in her heart. This made her highly relatable but also exciting and a little unpredictable in the plot, which makes for some really intense moments where you genuinely can’t guess what will happen next. Overall, I would certainly recommend Flashing Dark to science fiction and space opera enthusiasts alike.

Flashing Dark by Bobbie Falin follows Captain Vivi Zant, a young woman facing a lot. Upon delivery of her latest cargo, her ship is quarantined. Knowing she could lose her ship if she doesn't complete her job in time, Vivi desperately tries to fix things. This starts off a chain reaction where she makes the decision to save a child, a child who is not all that innocent. Still dealing with her own childhood trauma over the loss of her brother, she can't let another child die. When the child ends up abandoned on a dangerous planet, Vivi sets out to save her. Even if it costs her life.

Bobbie Falin has written an entertaining story with Flashing Dark. The characters are well developed and I really liked Vivi. She is strong and capable and you do feel for her plight. She has a unique look that I found interesting for a character. The story moves at a decent pace, with Vivi arriving at the station where she learns about the possibility of losing her ship. You can tell she has been working the job for a while and she has a kind of cynicism about the world. It does keep her alive though. The author has created a vivid world that I could easily picture as I read. I enjoyed reading about the history too, and how the humans came to join the space race. I think this would appeal to science fiction readers. I would recommend it.

Flashing Dark by Bobbie Falin is a science fiction novel with a twist. What are you willing to sacrifice for the life of one innocent person? Captain Vivi Zant is stuck in a similar dilemma. She was supposed to take her payment and get away, but the cargo on her ship is quarantined. Vivi should have had an inkling that something would go terribly wrong. And it absolutely did. One thing led to another, and Vivi and her crew were on a mission that was as perilous as she knew. However, everything else became unnecessary when she discovered that a human child was alone on the Moneyworld. Humans were forbidden in that place for a reason, and the kid was in deep danger. Vivi knew she had to do whatever it took to protect and get the kid back to safety, even if saving a life meant disrupting the peace of Earth Alliance and creating chaos.

Bobbie Falin did a fantastic job of merging the past with the present without letting either of them overshadow the other. While Vivi didn’t have a hero complex, she did have survivor’s guilt. That led her to protect the human child with everything she had. Resourceful and capable, Vivi is the kind of protagonist you wish your current young adult fiction had. The action was fantastic and realistic at the same time. To be honest, I felt like I was watching a spin-off of Guardians of the Galaxy. I could picture the different aliens mentioned, I felt Vivi’s terror and her anxiety as she lost the human kid. The descriptions were brilliantly vivid and that made the reading experience better than I imagined. I loved how feisty Vivi was, and she wasn’t afraid of relying on her team. The story was fantastic, and Vivi’s quest was truly brilliant. There wasn’t ever a moment where I was confused or remotely bored. Flashing Dark is a ride that I would highly recommend to everyone who enjoys a good science fiction novel!
