‘But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.”’ That was the command given by Christ to his followers – a command that is stretched to its limits in Fled for Refuge by Kristina Hall. The backdrop to this story is an alternate reality in which the US government marshals the Church - and specific to the plot, First Baptist Church - with an iron fist. Any proclamation or teaching that does not align with the government mandate is investigated by agents and ultimately crushed. The people in the story include Craig – the under-pressure pastor, Tony – a committed believer, and Merri – Tony’s sister, who although not a member of First Street is inevitably caught up in the government’s clampdown. Betrayal, denial, and courage are all mired in a precipitous plot, but who will be left standing to follow the example of Peter and the apostles?

Fled for Refuge is fast-paced, nerve-wracking, and intense. Kristina Hall pulls no punches in her demonstration of a fictitious yet feasible reality. Testament to the relevance of her novel is the fact that, although the Church in the US may not yet be under the pressure that her novel displays, there are places in the world where the fiction is reality. The novel is dialogue-heavy, and perhaps would have benefited from a richer balance of descriptive writing to magnify the tension of the plot, but this does not take away from the profound evangelistic purpose, which is delivered with great skill.

Things go from bad to worse for Tony in this unforgettable Christian Dystopian series! Getting to work only minutes before a car crashed through the wall of the church he serves as a bodyguard is not Tony's ideal workday, but could that be just the start? Kristina Hall writes an amazing dystopian in Fled For Refuge where everything from who to trust to what you believe (and what you're allowed to believe in) comes into question, and kept me reading long into the night! These characters are faced with difficult choices and impossible odds on every side, relationships and faith are tested as they struggle to survive and overcome in this new darkening world they find themselves in.

I was excited to read Flee For Refuge but didn't realize just how much I'd enjoy it until I started reading! It's so good and I loved seeing how the characters grew and adapted to this new life they found themselves in seemingly overnight! It's eerie how realistic some of the issues are when looking around at the world we live in today, and loved that Kristina Hall writes in such a way that many of the questions dealt with in the book and among the characters are also things that we as Christians and as people can also ask and consider in our own lives. An action-packed read that also leaves readers thinking. I can't wait to see how Tony and his sister, Merri, handle things in the next book!
