People have often commented on the language of food. It’s definitely a topic of fascination for a good portion of the population, and not because one has to eat food to survive. Food has become a big industry: celebrity cooks on talk shows (TV, radio and even blogs) have attracted a large audience. Why? Because people like to be amazed by what others can do with food and how they talk about food to make their visual production so appealing, so amusing, so entertaining. Food is language.

With the growing number of celebrity chefs on the food network and the growing number of reality shows that focus on finding the next great chef, it stands to reason that some would find this entertainment interesting from a research point of view. And that’s where Kelsi Matwick and Keri Matwick’s book, Food Discourse of Celebrity Chefs of Food Network comes in. Perhaps the first of its kind, this book explores the different avenues of the language of food or food as a language. With the multiple approaches used to attract the audience, chefs resort to storytelling, humor, food and recipe evaluations and so much more to varying degrees of intensity.

In Food Discourse of Celebrity Chefs of Food Network, Kelsi Matwick and Keri Matwick have researched extensively these means of communicating with food. The book is reasonably introduced and follows a systematic approach, with each chapter concluding with an extensive list of resources to further one’s study. There are also excerpts from various food shows to support each idea. This is a scholarly book that will spark some interest in those researching the language of food and linguists who specialize in various means of communication. Food as a language? Why not?
