Hundreds of years ago, magic was common in the land until a plague targeted the gifted ones. It caused them to fall into a deep sleep they never woke from. Then, as quickly as it arrived, the darkness lifted. Those that survived mourned the loss of their loved ones, but life went on without magic to help them. Now, a woman named Bælana has her dormant power awakened, and she determines to rule the land, creating chaos through her vicious creations. The fate of the land lies on the shoulders of twin siblings, Kiræ and Tom.

Forgotten Magic by Vicky Garlick is the debut for the Elementals series. The story opens with an intriguing prologue, giving readers a glimpse of the villain Bælana. It’s definitely a proverbial hook and readers will want to read the first chapter right away. The action scenes are good as Garlick writes them superbly. I had no trouble imagining the fight scenes – I could see and hear every sword thrust and parry, roars of the humanoid mingual beasts and much more.

The plot has some great twists, the world building is well structured and the characterization is good. Vala, the female warrior, instantly became my favorite. On the other hand, Vala’s adopted children, twenty-year-old twins Kiræ and Tom certainly have more room to grow, and scene transition can be more polished. All in all, this is an enjoyable read and I look forward to more adventure and magic in the next book in this series.
