Wow! Just wow! Have you ever read a book that leaves you feeling like you have to come up for air, and wishing you could meet the author, just to see how his mind works in real life? That’s certainly the feeling I ended up with after I read Gargoyle Hotel, the newly published work by author Christopher H. Sartisohn. Comprised of a collection of 34 ultra-short stories, many only a few pages long, this work defies categorization. Poetry, story-telling, gorgeous prose, an almost lyrical timbre, it’s hard for me to give an accurate synopsis of author Sartisohn’s work, except to say that it’s wonderful. Ranging from the true story, The Hungry, to the surreal Frozen Music, the thing that I can say best ties the work together is the gorgeous literary style.

Gargoyle Hotel isn’t a book that should be picked up as light reading. Each piece causes the reader to think deeply and to imagine greatly. As a lover of poetry, many of Christopher H. Sartisohn’s works appealed to me on the level that poetry does, as it pulled at my mind and forced me to contemplate the true meaning of the words on the page. Any reader who enjoys poetry, truly unique and sometimes abstract writing, or just fabulous, fabulous work would enjoy this book. This is the first work that I’ve read by this author, but I certainly hope he is continuing his efforts in this direction. I will be waiting to see what his inventive mind comes up with next.
