This book is the second one in the Gateway of India series. Gateway of India, Book Two by Ken Doyle is a collection of four short stories that have a common link. All the stories take place in Chughani Manor, an apartment building in an affluent neighborhood in Bombay. Each story is about an event that an individual resident or family in the building experiences. Through the thoughts and actions of these residents, the reader gains valuable information about the values and lifestyles of the upper classes in India. The residents vary – old and young, men and women, wealthy owners and committed servants. The common link between them could be a men’s evening bridge group, a secretive love relationship, or a true friendship.

Ken Doyle’s Gateway of India, Book Two is a pleasurable, enriching read. The vignettes are an interesting and enjoyable way to learn more about the Indian culture. Although the book is short, a quick read, I learned more about such topics as arranged marriages, cricket, and the practice of Ayurveda medicine. (Although I have done some reading about this type of medicine, its practical applications depicted in this scenario gave me greater insight.) And, I also learned that, no matter the culture, there are some issues common to all – colicky babies, empty nest syndrome, romantic affairs, the list goes on. I was especially touched by the first story, describing how an older gentleman grieved the death of his loving wife of many years. This book is truly a gem!
