Gavin Hart has a dream. In Gavin (Last Man Standing - Book 6) by Kathryn Hills, the dream of the Beatrice Hart Education Foundation is barely coming to fruition. Gavin’s close relationship with his grandmother led to a desire to educate children on the effects of climate change by providing school field trips. Unfortunately, Gavin’s family refuses to back him unless he marries a woman of their choice. Meanwhile, Sophie Martin is a substitute science teacher, staying with her Aunt Margie. Sophie has a crush on the man she saw working on a large boat in the harbor. She knows she shouldn’t have feelings because her boyfriend, Richard, is awaiting her return to Massachusetts. When a career fair starts at the school, she bumps into Gavin. Later that evening, she runs into him again and learns about his dream. Could this be destiny for the like-minded duo?

Kathryn Hills impressed me with the detail she provided, especially since this isn’t a lengthy novel. Sophie and Gavin wanted the same thing in a relationship, but both seemed afraid of rejection. I was happy when Gavin became more proactive in talking more about relationship matters. After reading how Sophie and her Aunt Margie spoke of Richard, I thought the answer for Sophie would have been obvious. I enjoyed the engaging dialogue and the scenic views depicted. I could almost breathe the same salty ocean air. There are plenty of moments of tension and obstacles that give suspense throughout the story. Unlike most romance novels, this book was unpredictable. I recommend Gavin to readers fond of slow-burn romances full of well-developed characters.
