Ghost – Where Truth and Fiction Collide by Michael Marra is, without doubt, the most challenging book I have ever read. Presented as a thriller it would be compelling, but with the comforting thought at the back of your mind that “it’s fiction”. Stark, brutal reality is alive and kicking in 1960s and '70s New York. Answerable only to New York State’s Attorney General and two senators, Special Operative in Deep Cover, Michael Marra, had one objective – to take down the drug barons that ruled the city. Corrupt killers with tentacles reaching into the heart of the law enforcers themselves, their driving force was greed for money, but most of all for power – to be the one on top, the man who decided who might live and who must die.

I never expected to “meet” a man with a license to kill; it’s the stuff of James Bond movies. He’s here in every chapter, and all of them stand up and yell “read me”, and yet Michael Marra is a man who walked in the shadows. Mainly chronological, with occasional flashbacks, the pace is fast and the truth almost beyond belief. Almost. Michael Marra’s motivation is justice and he puts his life on the line to get it. “To achieve peace, often we must go to war, whether a country or an individual.” Behind that is the Italian with strong family bonds and a passion for women who bring trouble along for the ride – a tortured soul at war with his God. I have never heard of anything like this before I knew someone in law enforcement. It is a fascinating brutal account of that era. It is told with the language and racial slurs of that time. But this man was unlike any other in his efforts to fight corruption and do the right thing. The thing is that I hope that he finally gets recognized for what he did because as the title indicates, he was a Ghost.

Compelling and true. It's hard to believe that a man could have such a riveting story and still be alive. I look forward to more books by this author.

Loved it! Kept my interest all the way through. What an interesting life. I could feel his struggle with good and evil, and the choices he had to make. What a love story and a tragedy! Great Book!

Right from the first word, I was hooked! I couldn’t read fast enough. Living the life of an undercover Intel op-one of the ‘good guys.’ Traveling within the belly of the beast. A daunting task to say the least. So impressed with, not only how Mr. Marra came ‘out’ on the other side, but, most especially, the retelling of the time he spent ‘breaking bread’ (as it were) with such clarity, detail, and, yes, even humor! I appreciated this memoir for many reasons: I can relate as a Sicilian born immigrant: family members, who lived that life (all of whom are gone): several other family members were and/or are in law enforcement, so I felt a VERY strong connection and pull into this memoir. Absolutely fantastic! VERY highly recommend.

I loved this book! it was a page turner. What this man went through for almost 10 years of his life is amazing. the things he had to do to try to improve our world. This man was a true hero, an unsung hero but a true hero. You never really know who or what your neighbors do for a living or what they do behind the scenes. I am for one am lucky to not only call this man a neighbor but a wonderful friend.....Now to wait to find out more about Madison.
