Gilly Ghost Loves Scaring the Most by Heather E. Robyn begins an exciting new series called Boo Crew. This children’s picture book features text in verse which makes it a fun read-aloud for Halloween or any time a quirky story is called for. The book shares the story of Gilly, who is a bit too good at scaring. He doesn’t understand that there is a time and place for his antics and Gilly’s friends may not enjoy his talents being on constant display. Robyn reminds readers to be mindful of how their actions can affect those around them. Young readers can relate to Gilly’s surprise at how others react to his pranks and will appreciate the gentle way in which he learns this important life lesson.

Heather E. Robyn dedicates the book to her illustrator, Zoe Mellors, who has designed an adorable cast. Gilly Ghost in his sleuthing hat and specs is full of personality. Each Halloween kid he encounters, including Mummy Maddy and Skel’ton Steve, is also wonderfully rich in character. Bright colors invite readers to spend some time looking at all the details on each page. Mellors’ work expertly complements Robyn’s amusing story. As a fun activity, readers can spot the robin on each page. With such a great start to the Boo Crew Series, it’ll be a treat to see how each of the other crew members is highlighted as they play their tricks. Gilly Ghost Loves Scaring the Most isn’t just for Halloween reading.
