Author Biography

Rich Leder has been a working writer for more than three decades. His credits include 19 produced movies—television films for CBS, Lifetime, and Hallmark and feature films for Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Tri-Star Pictures, Longridge Productions, and Left Bank Films—and seven novels for Laugh Riot Press.

He’s been the lead singer in a Detroit rock band, a restaurateur, a Little League coach, an indie film director, a literacy tutor, a magazine editor, a screenwriting coach, a wedding consultant, a PTA board member, a commercial real estate agent, and a visiting artist for the UNCW Film Studies Department, among other things, all of which, it turns out, was grist for the mill.

Gottiguard: The Fourth and Final Kate McCall Crime Caper by Rich Leder is the hilarious fourth and final installment of the off-Broadway actress turned private eye. In this suspenseful and sometimes touching mystery novel, we find Kate after investigating the murder of her PI father Jimmy, only this time it's a killer with a talent for song and dance. Her job now is to guard an edgy standup comic accused of murder. When he becomes a target, her father's killer gives a clue for the next one in his sights. As the victim count mounts, Kate turns to her ring of sleuthing cohorts to pursue the set of monsters. Though she is a funny lady, there is nothing to laugh at when the comedian she's protecting disappears. This could go two ways: She could catch two killers, or she could end up being a victim herself.

Once again Leder brings his Hollywood-level talent to a page-burner involving Kate, and if you're a fan, you kind of lament the fact that it is her curtain call. But that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the finale. She is as sharp and smart as ever, and the fact that she finds herself in jeopardy just adds to the high drama. The familiar offbeat humor is still LOL funny, the hardboiled tone permeates, and the supporting cast of characters adds spice and flair. Leder is one original writer and is exceptionally skilled at blending humor, drama, and heart-touching moments. He has a penchant for wordplay, like "Deadhead Redhead". Once again you get a peek behind the curtain and glimpse the inside world of actors and productions.

My favorite aspect of Kate and her capers is that she never leaves her acting chops at the door. And one of my favorite parts of Leder's writing is that it's always smooth and cleverly crafted, especially with the gallows' humor and dark wit, like the scene where Kate and her crew are texting cliches back and forth before the targeted funnyman Gotti goes on stage. A standup comic named Gotti? Now that's funny. You can expect adult language, sex, and violence. Definitely not for young readers. This one is for adults who want something fresh, lively, and different in their whodunnits. If Gottiguard: The Fourth and Final Kate McCall Crime Caper is Kate's last performance, Rich Leder has made sure she is going out on a high note.
