Grandpa loves to be with his grandchildren, a brother and a sister. In this colorfully illustrated book, they seem to spend a lot of time together building things like a doghouse, and just enjoying each other's company. But that's not the real story. It's really a rib-tickler story that makes sense of adult language - you know those cute phrases that adults like to use frequently, such as "Shake a leg" and "Lickity split" and "Let's get the ball rolling" and "It's back to square one". There are lots of other cute adult sayings. In this delightful picture book, children are introduced to an alternate translation for these sayings and adults, who hopefully will read this book along with their children, will learn the alternate translations as well.

Author Anne Merle gives the young reader in Grandpa Talks Funny a fun story about understanding, and creating a bridge between the generations of grandparent and grandchild. The illustrations tell a story about working together, children and grandparent, while the words tell a story about learning some silly adult sayings/phrases and what they really mean in terms of getting the job done, getting through the day with Grandpa. Children do understand what is being said, in spite of the unusual sayings that adults use. As Sister and Brother help Grandpa, they learn to understand and to speak like Grandpa, using his sayings/phrases. In other words, the children learn to speak Grandpa-ese. This is a cute book that puts those catch phrases adults love to use into understandable children's language. Well done!
