R.J. Knight's Grimoire is a Christian YA fantasy and sci-fi novel. The story is set at the Brighter Shades Summer College Camp which teaches the magical sciences. Most of the students are normal humans, but a few are Maortii, a race of humans who have animal-like traits. The principal characters in the story are six students who soon become friends: Scout Mitch, Sho Kojiro, Jock Smith, Micah Halen, Karma Kthdil, and Jim Wrangler. All of them have a magical gift or skill of one kind or another. For the first few weeks, the students live a normal life filled with courses, sports, and exploring the woods. The story turns and twists suddenly! Fierce and murderous demonic forces erupt when the six friends discover a small chest containing an ancient book. The action and pace escalate. The battle intensifies between good vs. evil, light vs darkness.

A riveting novel, I particularly enjoyed reading R.J. Knight's Grimoire because of its gritty and courageous principal characters, the six young friends Scout, Sho, Jock, Micah, Karma, and Jim. I was pulled into this terrific story by its powerful and terrifying prologue. I liked the unfolding of the story, revealing the magical gifts of each character as they battle an evil deadly entity. I felt the story was greatly enriched by the characters' individual inner journeys to strengthen their belief in God, to pray. I thought the descriptions and actions of the demons were very well imagined, evocative of their supernatural and evil nature. The fast pace, action, and twists and turns continue to the end, including the epilogue. A fantastic, intriguing novel about good and evil with memorable, formidable characters!
