Author Biography

Jack Young grew up in the Olneyville section of Providence, a turbulent mix of proud cultures. He slogged through twelve years of parochial schooling, emerging unimpressed and unconvinced. Like many city kids he was drawn to the idea of the country life, graduating from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in agriculture.

Young's path has been enjoyably erratic, moving from the secure but stifling embrace of Civil Service (Soil Conservation) to small-town cop, to crop management, which is touched on in his book Faraway Green. A time spent selling cars gave him valuable lessons in human behavior that he carries to this day. Young's travels have, by choice, centered on the lesser Caribbean islands, some real, some whimsical, as found in his book Hail Cigaros!, a Kirkus featured review selection.

Jack Young lives with his wife, a social worker, on an underperforming mini-farm in eastern Connecticut. He now devotes full time to writing after giving up teaching chemistry, and is currently in the final stages of book number three … as yet untitled.

Hail, Cigaros! by Jack Young combines humor and the masterful art of storytelling to offer readers a delightful ride. For years, the father of Prescott Bullard Jr. has paid exorbitant sums of money to support the island Republic of Cigaros where he has consistently bought low quality leaf tobacco. After his death, Prescott Bullard Jr. decides to put an end to this practice and he sends Warren Hornsby, who has problems of his own, to deliver the news to the eccentric and proud citizens of the island. But the confrontation will be something utterly different from what Hornsby expects and this is happening at a time when an American warship is headed towards the island. Get ready for intense action, great drama, and a conflict that will put you on the edge of your seat until you reach the exciting denouement.

Hail, Cigaros! is a beautifully written story that features exciting characters, including Hornsby, El Presidente and his radical brother Raoul, Rita Panatella, and many others. Jack Young demonstrates great storytelling skills and a knack for humorous scenes. The writing leaps majestically off the pages, laced with eye-catching descriptions that create powerful images in the minds of readers and that succinctly capture the intensity of the action that animates the plot. The plot is brilliantly imagined and it is written to read very fast. From the compelling characters to the excellent prose and the gripping plot, this story emerges as one that will keep readers turning the pages. You won’t be able to stop reading once you have started.
