Hat Check by David F. Berens is the first book in the Troy Bodean Adventures, an entry that begins with a humorous line as though announcing to readers that they are in for a tremendous literary treat and event: “Rick Hairre had not known before today that the barrel of a gun tasted like pennies.” Now, meet Troy Clint Bodean, a man who lives an affluent life style, with a good fishing pole, a pickup truck, and a beach house on a beautiful island in South Carolina. Life could have been peaceful and very enjoyable for him, except for the fact that he tumbles on a cowboy hat with a feather on the band and the hat looks just too good for him. He couldn’t part with it, but it seems to get him into more trouble than he can handle — it now seems everyone wants him dead, and they’ll stop at nothing to kill him, but why?

Thriller aficionados and fans of intriguing, fast-paced stories will be delighted to read this beguiling, action-packed story. I enjoyed the fact that the author introduces an element of mystery with the hat. It will remind readers to stick to their hats, no matter how great another person’s looks on them — you only have to read this book to find out why! The writing is great and the prose flows with ease, feeding readers with wonderful images and scenes that are intensely packed with both action and emotion. Hat Check by David F. Berens is one of the best thrillers I have read from a relatively new author and I will be looking out for other books by this author. It was a fun read!
