He Watches All My Paths by Stacey Jernigan is a gripping legal thriller with compelling characters. The opening immediately sets up the plot, introducing us to an unnamed, disgruntled character that you know will harbor some antagonism. The prologue states that this character’s life has been one of infinite disappointment, largely because of his experiences with the American justice system, and it ends by stating this man’s intention of not thinking of his plan as killing human beings but more like eliminating a scourge, and that this would not be morally wrong. Thus begins Judge Avery Lassiter’s life turning upside down when cryptic and terrifying letters are sent to her home and the courthouse by an apparently unhappy litigant. As the threat is real, Lassiter and her family will have to live under the watchful eye of U.S. Marshals while the FBI investigates. The suspect can be anyone, someone you least expect to pose harm to other human beings—until he becomes broken.

While He Watches All My Paths is billed as a legal thriller, it is much more than that, as it is an electrifying and poignant tale of justice and society. It is a novel about duty, the maddening force of obsession, and the decisions of authority. The impressive characters make He Watches All My paths a lively canvas. Stacey Jernigan has created believable people to give Judge Avery Lassiter and her family a scary and convincing world to occupy. Jernigan is very meticulous with her narrative, playing scenes and subplots with vivid details that may well be too much at times, but it makes her point deeper. It doesn’t lack clarity; a brilliant story that will not disappoint fans of legal thrillers.
