“Never let someone’s anger become your anger. Never let someone’s hate become your hate. Never let someone’s sin become your sin.” Sound words for every earthling, but not a lesson often carried through. When criminal attorney Danny Burke investigates the disappearance of the wealthy Mrs. Lombardi, he struggles with the innocence of his client who swears that he had nothing to do with the mysterious disappearance of his wife. During a well-deserved weekend fishing trip, Danny and his friends discuss their beliefs in life after death. Danny refuses to agree with the idea of an afterlife until he finds himself aboard an alien craft where “Noah” shares with him an unbelievable concept of another existence in space.

Danny is returned to Earth with the gift of hearing other people’s thoughts and understanding the value of resisting the human temptations of anger, hate, and sin. Using his new found gift, Danny solves the crime involved in his investigation and celebrates his ability to read the thoughts of people bent on evil activity. Danny is convinced that he can use this gift quietly, but the government has other plans for him. When the CIA gets involved, the young attorney realizes that he is up against more than he bargained for. Living with an alien nanobyte in his brain is not the “gift” he can use for the betterment of his peaceful life, not matter what the government seems to believe.

Hearing Thoughts by Anthony Diffley is an intriguing tale of the possibilities of alien existence. I like the idea of a better form of social beliefs that Diffley exhibits in his alien vs. earthling exploration of life outside the realms of our known galaxy. This story screams for a sequel.
