If you are looking for a cookie-cutter romance with characters that are perfectly beautiful, perfectly sculpted and perfectly…perfect, forget it. Bonnie McCune’s "Heart-Strong" gives us real characters who look like regular people, have average characteristics and yet are still perfectly wonderful. Rachel Kinsey is a sucker in the best possible way. She sees the best in people, specifically men, which means she usually ends up getting hurt or at the very least, being extremely disappointed. Despite her less than stellar history, which includes an ex-husband leaving her unable to trust her own judgment when it comes to men, Rachel is eager and hopeful. Unfortunately Jim Landers is a bit of a snob with his own ideas about how a woman should (and shouldn’t) be, and unfortunately Rachel is in the latter category. She doesn’t have the perfect body, she is only mildly attractive and a little flighty, and Jim thinks he belongs with someone better than that.

That in a nutshell is what "Heart-Strong" is about; what we think we want versus what our hearts actually want. That fantasy we all hang onto about what features and characteristics our “perfect mate” possesses is just that, a fantasy. Meanwhile we, like Jim, run the risk of being sucked into the vortex of someone who has the outer packaging we want but when opened, we find a lot to be desired. This well-written short story is a compelling one in the overall lessons but I wanted to know so much more about Rachel and Jim. McCune has given us a funny and compelling story with characters you want to root for because they could be our best friends, co-workers and neighbors.

Thanks for the realistic and supportive review. As the author, it warmed the cockles of my heart (whatever those are).
